San
Francisco’s Day is October 4. In Quibdó, there’s a procession of
thousands of people that lasts more than five hours, going through the
twelve “Franciscan” barrios—in each barrio there’s an “ark",
a display of adoration of San Pacho. Some of these are quite elaborate,
and a few of them even open up once the people are assembled in front of
them. There is in some cases a social content to these
displays—certainly there is a celebration of nature and animals, as one
would expect, and calls on the saint to bring peace and well-being. This
is a somewhat solemn procession, certainly there’s a lot of praying and
singing of hymns, especially at the long stops in front of each of the
arks. Steve Cagan |
