Quibdó is the capital city of Chocó Department, in western Colombia. The municipality of Quibdó has an area of 3,337 square kilometers and a population of more than 200,000 people mainly consisting of Afro-Colombians. The city was founded in 1654 as San Francisco de Quibdó. It has served as Chocó's capital since 1948. It is a regional commercial and manufacturing centre, housing metalworks, sawmills, and soft-drink plants. Gold and platinum mines and a hydroelectric plant are nearby. Quibdó is accessible by river, highway, and air.
